A few years back whilst renovating our bathroom,
my better half had the bright idea of covering the floor with 2p coins instead of coventional tiling. As with most situations in our relationship… she comes up with these wild ideas, and I’m the one who has to come up with the plan to execute them.
Thought I’d share some photos and details of the project which was an extremely dull process.
– I first measured the area to be covered and estimated that I would need approximately 7,000 coins laid out in a hexagonal close packed arrangement to cover the entire floor.
– I managed to get the majority of the coins from my local bank (had to order them in advance). I got some very strange looks when collecting. The remainder of the coins were obtained by visiting our local seaside town arcades (Seaton Carew).
– Each coin had to be individually glued into place onto the plywood substrate. This took around 20 hours.
– Once all coins were glued down, the gaps were filled with a charcoal grout for contrast. A task which I wouldn’t wish upon my worst enemy.
– With the grout set, I was then able to mix and pour approx 10kg of clear epoxy resin onto the coins. This sealed the coins to prevent further oxidation and gave a hard wearing surface to walk on.
I was very much happy with the final result, but not long after the Mrs had another bright idea of moving house.
I wonder what strange and wonderful projects she can dream up for me in the new home.
