The beautiful 1986 song Lionel Richie wrote for his daughter Nicole.

It was a love that transformed his life.

Before Lionel Richie laid eyes on Nicole, his world revolved around writing global hits and touring for millions of fans.

But an unexpected encounter at a Prince concert would change everything.

At just two years old, Nicole Richie was on stage playing the tambourine with Prince—unaware that she was about to become Lionel’s future daughter.

“The real discovery that night wasn’t Prince’s performance,” Richie told HuffPost in 2020. “It was seeing a 2-year-old on stage with Prince, playing a tambourine.”

Speaking to Nicole in the same interview, Lionel shared, “I think you changed my life profoundly by softening my heart. Up until that point, everything was about songwriting, business, and touring.”

“Then, all of a sudden, I found something I could truly fall in love with—something that would never leave me. How about that?”

After fostering Nicole as his first child, Lionel channeled his overwhelming emotions into a heartfelt song dedicated to her: Ballerina Girl.

By the time Lionel Richie was creating his iconic 1986 album, Dancing on the Ceiling, he was already a global superstar, effortlessly topping the charts.

So what better place to include a song that captured the relationship that shaped the man he had become?

Richie wrote Ballerina Girl for Nicole after watching her dance in ballet classes at just four years old.

At the time, she wasn’t yet his daughter legally—he had yet to adopt her—but she was already living with Lionel and his then-wife, Brenda Harvey.

Lionel was close friends with Nicole’s biological parents, musician Peter Escovedo (brother of Sheila E.) and assistant Karen Moss, who were struggling financially and admitted their family situation was falling apart.

Wanting to give Nicole the life she deserved, the Hello singer stepped in to help in any way he could, leading him and Brenda to care for Nicole as a child.

After years of raising her as their own, Lionel and Brenda officially adopted Nicole in 1990 when she was nine years old.

The American Idol judge later opened up about how adopting Nicole transformed his life, reshaping his priorities.

“Nicole was truly a godsend. She was a little girl who needed a chance,” Richie told People in 2022.

“She was used to people coming and going. But when she looked at me, I told her, ‘I’m not going anywhere.’”

Nicole repaid that trust and loyalty, standing by Lionel’s side—especially after his difficult divorce from Brenda, just a few years after they had officially adopted her.

Reports surfaced that Brenda “caught” Lionel with dancer Diane Alexander—whom he would later marry and have two more children with—leading to their divorce in 1993.

Through that challenging time, it was Nicole and their unbreakable bond that kept Lionel grounded.

“Brenda and I went through a very interesting time,” Richie told People. “We didn’t agree on a lot of things, but we did agree on [Nicole].”
