Veteran actor Dick Van Dyke and his wife, Arlene Silver, have evacuated their Malibu home as the fast-moving Franklin Fire wreaks havoc across Southern California. Van Dyke shared the emotional update on Facebook, revealing that one of their pets, a cat named Bobo, escaped during the evacuation.
Their residence in the celebrity-filled Serra Retreat neighborhood recently gained attention as the setting for Coldplay’s “All My Love” music video, in which Van Dyke appeared.
“I’m acutely aware that I’m, you know, could go any day now, but I don’t know why—it doesn’t concern me. I’m not afraid of it. I have that feeling, totally against anything intellectual I am, that I’m going to be all right,” Van Dyke reflected in the clip.
Now, the 98-year-old actor’s home is among those at risk as the fire, reportedly driven by powerful Santa Ana winds and dry conditions, spreads through Malibu and the Santa Monica Mountains.
According to USA Today, the Franklin Fire erupted late Monday, December 9, and quickly grew to over 3,000 acres by Tuesday night, with no containment reported, according to CalFire.

Over 20,000 residents in Malibu are under evacuation orders and warnings, with firefighters battling challenging conditions, including wind gusts up to 50 mph, low humidity, and rugged terrain.
Aside from Van Dyke’s home, the fire has affected several high-profile residents, including Mark Hamill, Barbra Streisand, and Cher. Cher’s publicist stated that she evacuated to a hotel with her pets on Monday evening.
According to Joe Sirard of the National Weather Service in Los Angeles at the time, a red flag warning would stay in effect through at least Wednesday, possibly longer, as strong winds persist.
“It’s just a very dangerous situation. The crews are obviously doing their best to fight the fire, but it’s still hard to contain at this time,” he said.

Los Angeles County Fire Chief Anthony Marrone reported that initial assessments show at least seven structures destroyed and eight damaged, with further evaluations ongoing.
“Damage inspection teams have been assigned to the incident, and they will assist with a more accurate accounting of incident losses tomorrow,” he shared.
As fire officials work to contain the blaze, Van Dyke’s social media post sparked an outpouring of support from fans. “Thank you for keeping your fans in the loop. We all pray for everyone’s safety, fur babies included,” a fan said.
“Pray you find your sweet baby! Thoughts and prayers with everyone affected. 🙏,” another commented. “Praying for your safety and that of the community. Here’s to Bobo’s safe return. 🙏🦋,” a user stated.
Someone else remarked, “How terrible these wildfires are. Hands go out to all of the Firefighters and First Responders for their aid. As well as the American Blue Cross. Praying that you and your family are safe, as well as your animals, Mr. Van Dyke. Prayers for the whole community. ✝️🛐♋”

“Please continue to be safe 🖤 really really hoping and praying Bobo is found and returned back to you 🫂🫶🏻❤️🥺 sending all my love and positivity your way!!!!” a supporter said.
Continuing USA Today’s report, the fire has also impacted Malibu’s infrastructure and daily life. Mandatory evacuations have closed schools and disrupted power to large portions of the city. Parts of the Pacific Coast Highway remain closed, with access restricted to residents and evacuees.

Firefighters and first responders are working tirelessly, with over 1,500 personnel deployed to combat the blaze. However, containment efforts remain challenging due to dangerous conditions. Despite the risks, no fatalities or serious injuries have been reported, though a sheriff’s deputy’s cruiser was damaged by the flames.
California Governor Gavin Newsom announced that federal assistance had been secured to support firefighting efforts. He urged residents to remain vigilant and follow evacuation orders as the red-flag warning for high fire danger remains in effect.
Malibu, an iconic coastal enclave, has experienced devastating wildfires in the past. The Franklin Fire evokes memories of the 2018 Woolsey Fire, which destroyed homes and displaced thousands, including high-profile residents.
As the fire continues and containment efforts persist, Dick Van Dyke‘s plea for Bobo and concern for his community highlight the challenges facing families amid the crisis.
